The first lecture has now been confirmed, and the details are below.

Lecture Title: The Science of Climate Change: Debunking the Myths

Speaker: Professor Matthew England

(If you refer the this map of UNSW, the law building is located in grid F8)

Date: 23/05/07 Wednesday

Why should you come for this lecture? Well, here are some great reasons!

1. At the moment there is no science so hotly debated as climate science.

2. Views of climate change range from total denial of the basics through to apocalyptic scenarios of doom and destruction.

3. So what do we know about the climate system and greenhouse gases? How can we separate fact from fiction?

4. In this talk Professor Matthew England will outline what is known, and what is unknown, about global climate change.

5. This talk will focus on the science of climate change, what is known and unknown, with an explanation of how scientists formulate reports such as the IPCC.

We hope to see you there, and if you have any enquiries at all, feel free to send us an email.

Welcome to new visitors!

For those of you who are checking in here as a result of our promotion at Tuesday night's public lecture on climate change, Welcome!

We are in the process of organizing many interesting lectures on climate change from a scientific point of view. As outlined in the first post on this blog, we attempt to take a neutral stance so as not to alienate any one group of individuals who just want to learn more about how science is tackling this global issue. If you are interested, send us an email at climate.variance (at) gmail.com, and we'll surely add you to the mailing list. Alternatively, you can simply bookmark this page, and check back regularly as there will be frequent updates posted here.

Tentatively, our first lecture will be by Professor Matthew England of the Climate and Environmental Dynamics Laboratory at the UNSW Department of Mathematics and Statistics. It is currently scheduled to be held on 23 May 2007, at UNSW. Updates pertaining to the precise time and location will be posted up shortly.

Thank you again for your interest, and we look forward to hearing from you!
